Nemali is a village
located in the Gampalagudem mandal, NTR
district of the Indian state of Andhra
Pradesh. It is under the
administration of Tiruvuru revenue division. The word
Nemali means "peacock"
in Telugu.
Swayambhu Sri Venugopala
Swamy temple at Nemali where Lord Venugopala Swamy, the form of Sri Krishna
along with Rukmini Devi and Satyabhama are presiding in this temple. Swayambhu
Sri Venugopala Swamy Idol was found underground in the year 1953 and was
worshipped by devotees from then. As the idol was self manifested (Swayambhu),
it was said that Peacock feather (Nemali) fell down from his crown here and Sri
Krishna settled here as Sri Venugopala Swamy. Temple was very neat and ambience
& environment is good. A mirror room present inside the temple premises is
a must visit as Swamy Idol was placed on the swinging cradle which is eye
catching inside.
The Sri Venugopala Swamy
Temple in Nemali Village, situated in the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh,
is renowned for its significance. According to local belief, the deity of Lord
Venugopala emerged from beneath the earth's surface in 1953. This idol,
discovered within the earth, became an object of veneration, granting solace to
devotees' aspirations. The temple is beautifully located near the Nemali Eru
river, which flows to the north of the village, originating from Kallur Guttas
and merging with the Muneru near Keesara.
Culture and Festivals
The temple complex holds
a captivating mirror shrine, adding to its allure. Daily worship is a norm,
with special observances held on Mondays and Fridays. Notably, the temple is
known for its grand celebrations of "Pavithrotsavalu," an annual
event that signifies the "Festival of Holy Purification." During
Pavithrotsavalu, which spans several days, the temple premises come alive with
intricate decorations. Idols are ritually cleansed, anointed with fragrant
oils, adorned in fresh attire and jewelry, all carried out meticulously by
devoted priests and worshippers. The festival entails processions where the
deity is paraded on ornate chariots or palanquins, allowing devotees to
take apart in the presence. The event is further enriched by cultural
performances, religious discourses, and devotional music and dance. Participation is
enthusiastic, drawing devotees from local communities and neighboring regions.
Their engagement in the festival reflects their earnest pursuit of blessings
and connection with the in. Moreover, Pavithrotsavalu acts as a catalyst for
unity among families and friends, reinforcing their spiritual ties. The festival's
significance extends beyond the religious realm, as it significantly
contributes to the cultural tapestry and social cohesiveness of the community.
This celebration underscores the temple's role as a hub for spiritual and
communal life, forging a sense of shared devotion and harmony among devotees. The
festival's enduring appeal underscores its vital place in the hearts of those
who participate and reinforces the temple's significance in the local culture
and spiritual landscape.
Architecture
The temple architecture
follows a Dravidian structure with a front Gopuram and no other Gopurams. There
is a large Prakhram, and the mandapa is quite big leading to the sanctum, above
which there is the shikhara. There are various other chambers with various
deities, including a mirror chamber with Gopala on a swing. I have witnessed a
similar chamber in Laxmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir) in New Delhi.
