Rekha Deula/Dakshina Kali/Pataleshwar Temple:

The Paikapada Pataleshwar temple or Rekha Deula is situated on the banks of the Nagavali River, just 25 km from Rayagada town. A revered shrine dedicated to Lord Pataleshwar Shiva, this sacred temple is not only a place of worship for Lord Shiva but also houses deities like Lord Jagannath, Maa Dakhineswari Kali, and Chamunda, creating a divine ambiance.

The temple is renowned for its significant festival, Mahashivratri, which attracts devotees from various parts of Odisha throughout the year. An ancient temple, the temple complex consists of the much renovated new Jagannatha temple on the left, while the old Rekha Deuls with ancient structures still stand in the right with multiple vimanas all around.

It is believed that the temple contains 99,999,999 Shiva lingam. The temples are believed to be constructed between 8th and 13th century, including a dilapidated fort.

The temple is also known as Dakshin Kali and is a living example of the masterful and skillful Kalinga style of architecture of temples with iconographies of Durga, Kali, Shiva, Ganesha, Shiv lingas, nagas, Kartikeya on the walls.

The temple is situated on the banks of a beautiful lake, which makes the temple more beautiful and serene.

Jay Durga Temple, Paikapada:

A couple of KMs ahead of the Rekha Deula is the Jay Durga temple. I am not sure of which one is the Durga temple, but there are two temples, one with a very old architecture, other further ahead in a very small house shaped structure (which was closed), but the Durga idol was visible from the small crevice.

The first temple has a typical Kalinga styled architecture with beautiful iconographies on the walls, while the second one is a very small temple ahead. Visiting both the temples is worth and if you are in Rayagada, don’t miss these places.

We stayed at Sai Residency A/C at Rayagada, which is at a very good location and at very descent rate too. The rooms are really good and the stay is very good. There are other good hotels available at Rayagada too, if one would like to explore.
