Kalinga was one of the influential regions in ancient India in an area that is now Odisha, Chattisgarh, east Telangana and northeast Andhra Pradesh. Various dynasties between the c. 4th century BCE to about the c. 8th-century CE ruled it (the Kalinga style continued between the 9th and 13th-centuries). Almost all of these were Hindu dynasties and they built some distinctive, spectacular temples as well patronized Buddhist and Jain monuments. There more lasting impact is found in Southeast Asia, through trade and migration of religious ideas. In parts of SE Asia, there influence was so extensive, that Indians were broadly called "klings" no matter which part of India they came from.

Jayati village of Vizianagaram district is one of about twelve notable sites in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha area known for surviving or ruined Kalinga temples.

Jayathi has two ancient 11th century Kalinga styled brick temples, one dedicated to Ganesha, Parvati/Durga temple and the bigger Shiva temple. King Kamarnava of Eastern Ganga Dynasty built these temples. He bought sculptors from Mehboobnagar to built the shiva temple in Jayathi, Gallavalli, Narayanpuram and Saripalli simultaneously. He also donated many villages for the maintenance of these temples. (Source: scriptures on the temple).

Legends and History/Beliefs

Jayantha the son of Indra had to attack Rakshasas and he built these temples to win the battle. Accordingly this village is named Jayanthapuram, then subsequently Jayanth and finally Jayati.
