Nellore’s history goes back by more than 1500 years,
the territory along the River Penna formed the northern most boundary of the
Pallavas, Cholas and most of the ancient South Indian kingdoms.
Vikramasimhapuri as the place was known in the 11th and 12th centuries was also
the capital of the Nellore Chola kings. Summing up the entire history of the
city and connecting the ancient world of Vikramasimhapuri with today’s fast
developing, yet chaotic city of Nellore is the Talpagiri Ranganathasway Temple.
The Sri Ranganthaswami Temple in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India is
a Hindu temple dedicated
to Lord Ranganatha a resting form of Lord Vishnu.
This temple, also called Talpagiri Ranganathaswami temple or Ranganayakulu.
is one of the oldest temples in Nellore. It is located on the banks of
the Penna River and
is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century. Just before the main
entrance of the temple is a huge tower, called Gaaligopuram,
which literally means "wind tower". This tower is approximately 70
feet high and has 10 feet of gold plated vessels on top of it,
called kalashams. The gopuram was constructed by Yeragudipati
Venkatachalam panthulu.

the Nellore (Simhapuri) installed the deity. Sri Rajendra Ubhaya
Kulothunga Cholan”, ruling the region between Kaveri and Godavari’ visited
this temple in the 12th century and constructed the garbhalayam. and the
Mandapam. In 13th Century “Sri Jatavarma Sundara Pandyan” Conquered this
region over “Manuma Sidhi” and celebrated his joys of victory in this temple and
gifted the Lord with several ManYams and lands.

Legend
The sacredness of river
pennar is described in the arthkhandam in brahmadapuranam. It goes to show that
a dipping in the river cures all the disease and that any ceremony performed at
this river fulfils the intention in doing so.
Sri Mahavishnu intended
to reside for some time in Bhulokam with Ramadevi. The Lord called for
Adhiseshu and ordered to create a place to reside at a distance of 16 miles
from the sea. Adhiseshu formed hill with all sorts of trees. The hoods of
Audiseshu extended up to satyaloka, hence the people in Bhulokam were reaching
Satyalokam without performing yagnas. The Devotees and Dikpalakas complained to
Lord Brahma that they are not receiving their respective “HAVIRBHAGAM” as there
are none to perform yagas and Agnikaryams. At the instance of sri Brahma, Lord
sri Vishnu had touched the hood with his feet. The hoods, due to the pressure
of the feet of the Lord, have been suppressed to the level of the surface of
the hillock. Hence this place is called ralpagiri. Subsequently Sri Kasyapa
Maharshi performed Ekadasi Krathu on this hillock. on the eleventh day of the Krathuvu,
sri Mahavishnu appeared in the Homagundam. Then sri Kasyapa Maharshi requested
to make this place equar to srirangam. The Lord therefore appeared here on
Audisayanam in the name of sri Ranganadha Swami. The Lord is resting on
Audiseshu with Sridevi and Bhoodevi at the feet and Brahma at Nabhi on padmam,
The Tempre of Ranganayaki Ammavaru is on southern side. sri Andal Temple and
Alwar,s temple are on the northern side of temple. Sri Venkateswara swamy
Temple constructed in recent years at southern side of the temple.
Every year during the month of March–April (which
varies according to the Indian calendar) a grand festival is celebrated. These
are called Brahmotsavam

and Photography
There is no dedicated parking. It’s a huge temple but
situated in the narrow crossroads. We somehow managed to park the car in front
of the temple in front of houses. But it is better to take a local mode of
transport if you are staying in Nellore.
Photography is allowed but not in the garbagriha.
Drones can be used from the back of the temple on the river bank

Talk about this a bit:
